This project was a collaborative effort between the science and social studies teachers. The kids had been learning about the history of mummies with Ms. Rivera, Ms. Edge, and Ms.Metz. In order for them to truely understand the process we performed the mummification of apples in science. Here the kids had a first hand look at what it was like hundreds of years ago when people practiced mummification. After studying Ancient Egypt these 6th grade students were experimenting to find out how mummies were made. The students carved faces in apples and then buried them in different mixtures of salt, epsom salt and baking soda. The mummified apples will soon be excavated from their "tombs." Students will analyze their results ans compare the apple before and after the embalming process. |
